Essential Patents and Coordination Mechanisms

Authors: Baron, J., Pohlmann, T.

Motivation & Goal:

Since we had two data sets, one on patent pools (Cerna ParisTech) and one on informal standards consortia (TU Berlin) that were complementary, we decided to write a paper together. Our unit of observation is formal standards to which we were able to match our common data. Building upon more than 64.000 patent declarations of essential patents to all major SDOs, we investigate how formal standardization, consortia and patent pools influence patent declarations.

Open Problems:

We use panel data und our explained count variable is highly inflated by zeros. We are still searching for a suitable estimator. We also face the problem of autocorrelation. We are happy to receive some tips or comments to these problems.
